Exploring Where Earth's Weather Meets Space Weather

The Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON), the newest addition to NASA’s fleet of Heliophysics satellites, launched on October 10, 2019 at 9:59 p.m. EDT. Led by UC Berkeley, scientists and engineers around the world came together to make ICON a reality.

The goal of the ICON mission is to understand the tug-of-war between Earth’s atmosphere and the space environment. In the "no mans land" of the ionosphere, a continuous struggle between solar forcing and Earth’s weather systems drive extreme and unpredicted variability. ICON will investigate the forces at play in the near-space environment, leading the way in understanding disturbances that can lead to severe interference with communications and GPS signals.

Mission Operations Update #5 - New Nighttime FUV O+ retrievals

Dr. Thomas Immel 0 98

The ICON FUV 2.5 product for nighttime O+ profiles is updated to version 4 and available now in the public FTP archive. This product now contains a data quality flag indicating the possibility of additional radiance in the scene due to precipitation of conjugate photo electrons. This is further described in the product documentation, available on the Data page of this site.

Science Data Update: First Hough Mode retrievals coming to the data site

Dr. Thomas Immel 0 48

ICON is in process of approving the Hough Mode product, the first Level 4 product, available for most of 2020. This product comes in 2 parts; 1) a set of diurnal and semidirunal tidal amplitudes in a sliding 30-day window for 2020 centered on the day of interest, and 2) a TIEGCM lower boundary specification for the same date.

Update: These files are now all available on the public ftp site

Documentation for each of these components (1, 2) of the product are also available on the FTP site.
