IVM - The Ion Velocity Meter

Full name

The Ion Velocity Meter

Lead Institution

UT Dallas logo

The IVM consists of two planar thermal ion sensors, a retarding potential analyzer (RPA) and an ion drift meter (IDM).

What does it do?

IVM will provide measurements of the ion drift velocity in the spacecraft reference frame, the ion temperature and the total ion number density at the location of the spacecraft.

The IVM will produce measurements of the plasma drift with unprecedented sensitivity to achieve ICON's science goals.
